Ancient Marks

Since the dawn of civilization, man has marked his body. Like ancient rock art etched across the land, we have decorated our skin with the rituals of life: from birth to death to initiation rituals of wisdom from child to adult and adult to elder to marks of identity, kinship, tribe and belonging. We have marked our bodies to make a statement of who we are. For eight years, I followed the flow of ink around the world to discover and photograph remarkable examples of traditional tattooing and marking of the body.
